The Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky were part of one of the most innovative literacy efforts of the Great Depression. From 1935-1943, these mostly local women rode horseback or mule through the mountains of eastern Kentucky, delivering books to families in remote communities. Packhorse librarians traveled in all weather, carrying books, magazines, scrapbooks, and homemade materials to eager readers—ultimately reaching nearly 100,000 Kentuckians.

The Packhorse Librarians transformed literacy and access to information across Appalachia and laid the groundwork for future mobile library services, including Kentucky’s bookmobiles.
