The Dominique chicken (also known as Dominikers or Dominic) is considered to be America’s oldest breed of chicken dating back around the 1750’s. They are characterized by their rose comb and black and white barred plumage. Dominiques are often mistaken as Barred Rocks. Being one of the ancestor breeds in creating the Barred Rock breed and where the Barred Rock got their barred plumage from. Dominiques are used for their meat and eggs. Females can lay up to about 250 medium brown eggs a year. You can see Homeplace’s Dominique chickens free roaming the Homeplace farm (often hanging around the single pen house or orchard).
